CHATRI DESIGN CENTRE

Chatri Design Centre (Shrewsbury School) by Shrewsbury based architects Baart Harries Newall (BHN architects)
Chatri Design Centre, Shrewsbury School
An extension and remodelling of a existing 1960’s building at Shrewsbury School.

The existing building contained conventional classrooms forming the Humanities Department of the School – and was perhaps the least attractive building on the campus.

The School required to co-locate their CDT and ICT teaching facilities, and to update the relevance of these faculties for their new co-educational intake.

Recognising that the use of computers is now intrinsic to both design and manufacture, the combined department is now called Design and Computing, and is located in the new design centre.

The building is extended at first floor level, over a large flat roof, and an over-sailing canopy roof provide shade and cohesion to the main elevation.

A glazed double height entrance hall clearly signals the entrance, and provide a space for exhibition and display.
