Restoration of an urban park

The restoration of Mary Stevens Park, which was funded from a grant by the Heritage Lottery Fund Parks for People Programme, was carried out in three phases.

The first two phases saw the repair and restoration of the Grade II listed gates and bandstand and the conversion of a redundant park office building into a new café.

The third phase saw improvements to the landscape and lake, work which was carried out by Plincke Landscapes and Hafren Water.

Central to the brief was to provide opportunities for local craftsmen and the use of traditional conservation skills and so all materials and contractors were sourced locally, with works including hand forged wrought iron work, Portland stone masonry, fine lime putty pointing, zinc roofing, cast iron repair and gilding.
