Creating a contemporary dining solution

The High School is an independent girls’ school, housed in a listed red-brick Victorian building built onto the medieval town wall of Shrewsbury.

The existing dining hall is located in the semi-basement floor and was in the style of traditional school canteen.  The space was far too small for the number of pupils at the school and did not respond to the way in which the school wanted to prepare and offer meals.

The school’s ambition was to run the dining room as a 12-hour facility so that kitchen could respond to the different needs of the girls throughout the school day.

The space was extended by a new conservatory with a large roof lantern, as well as breaking into three adjacent rooms.  This allows for a range of dining experiences, from an open refectory, to more intimate spaces and private dining areas.
